Why

The manufacturer maintains a gluten list, and Clamato is not on it. KDP's Product Facts site groups its US portfolio by "the eight major food allergens and ingredient sensitivities," and gluten is one of the tracked fields. All eight Clamato SKUs (Tomato Cocktail, Cane Sugar, Lime, Picante, the two Michelada Especial versions, and both Sweet & Spicy Mango Chile versions), are enumerated under Shellfish (Mollusks). None of them appears under Gluten, and none under Wheat.

That flag is not decorative. Exactly one KDP US product is listed under Gluten: Mr & Mrs T Horseradish Bloody Mary Mix. Open its page and the reason is right there in the panel ("SOY SAUCE (WATER, SOYBEANS, WHEAT, SALT)"), and it carries three flags: Gluten, Soy and Wheat. So KDP does look for gluten in tomato-based mixers, does find it when it's there, and does say so. Clamato's silence is a negative result from a test that fires, not silence from a company that never checked.

The panel is clean. Clamato Tomato Cocktail (US) is water, tomato concentrate, high fructose corn syrup, salt, monosodium glutamate, citric acid, spices, onion and garlic powder, ascorbic acid, dried clam broth, vinegar, natural flavors, red chili pepper and Red 40. Allergen line: shellfish (mollusks). No wheat, no barley, no malt. The Michelada Especial version adds jalapeño and chipotle purée, yeast extract and a Worcestershire sauce sub-list: water, vinegar, salt, sugar, malic acid, caramel colour, spices, molasses, dextrose, gums, citric acid, natural flavours, smoke flavour, garlic and onion powder. No malt vinegar and no soy sauce in that sub-list, which is the pair that would have caused a problem.

One honest limit. There is no printed "gluten-free" claim on the Clamato bottle and no third-party certification. What exists is an affirmative manufacturer disclosure of which products contain gluten, from which Clamato is excluded. That is strong, and it is not the same as a tested under-20-ppm claim.

Now the part most pages miss. Clamato's own site calls the michelada its "signature recipe," and the recipe reads: lime, 4 oz Clamato, a dash of Worcestershire, habanero sauce, ice, Tajín, and "1 12-oz. bottle of beer." Mexican lagers are barley-brewed. Modelo, Pacifico, Corona, Tecate: all gluten-containing beer. Whatever the juice does, the finished drink a bartender hands you is a beer cocktail. Ordering "a michelada, hold the beer" is ordering a glass of Clamato.

And there is a Clamato you should not drink. In November 2023 Keurig Dr Pepper Canada launched a malt-based ready-to-drink Mott's Clamato Caesar with the Geloso Group, sold through Quebec grocery and convenience retailers. "Malt" means barley. That canned Caesar is a different animal from the juice bottle in the same brand livery, and it is not gluten-free. The bottled Canadian Clamato juice is not the problem; the alcoholic can is.

Two garnish-level traps. Worcestershire varies by market: the US Lea & Perrins is built on distilled white vinegar and is labelled gluten free, while the UK and Canadian recipe uses malt vinegar from barley. And Maggi seasoning, a near-universal michelada addition in Mexico, is a genuine unknown, published listings for the same Jugo bottle disagree, some showing wheat gluten and a Contains: Wheat warning. Read the actual bottle; don't assume.

How much risk is this?

Celiac disease: the juice is a green light on the evidence above. The michelada is not, and this is the practical failure mode. Someone reads "Clamato is gluten-free," orders a michelada at a taquería, and drinks 12 oz of barley lager. Buy the beer separately and choose it yourself.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity: same split. Juice fine; beer is the variable.

Wheat allergy: wheat would be declared under FALCPA and is not, on any US Clamato. KDP flags wheat separately from gluten and Clamato carries neither flag.

Shellfish allergy, read this. Every Clamato contains dried clam broth and every one is flagged for mollusks. This is the allergen Clamato actually has. It is gluten-free, not allergen-free.

Other: it is extremely high in sodium (1,580 mg per 16 fl oz serving on the US panel) and contains MSG, if either matters to you.

Is a michelada gluten-free? No, not as normally served. The Clamato is fine; the 12 oz of Mexican lager in it is barley beer. Rebuild it with a dedicated gluten-free beer or cider.

Is Clamato Michelada Especial gluten-free? It carries the same status as plain Clamato on KDP's disclosure, flagged for shellfish only, not for gluten or wheat. It is a seasoned non-alcoholic mixer; the alcohol is whatever you add.

Is a Bloody Caesar gluten-free? The Clamato and the vodka are. Watch the Worcestershire (malt vinegar outside the US), and watch a celery-salt rim that has been sitting next to a beer tap.

Is Mr & Mrs T Bloody Mary mix gluten-free? The Horseradish one is not, its panel names soy sauce containing wheat, and KDP flags it for gluten, soy and wheat. Do not carry the Clamato verdict across to the Mr & Mrs T range; check each mix on its own page.

Does the MSG or "natural flavors" in Clamato hide gluten? MSG is fermented from starch, usually corn or cane, and is not a gluten source. "Natural flavors" is the one genuinely unsourced line, but KDP flags gluten elsewhere in its own range and does not flag it here, which is the best available answer short of a lab result.

Is Clamato the same in Canada? The Canadian juice uses glucose-fructose rather than HFCS and lists no gluten grain either. The difference that matters in Canada is the malt-based canned Caesar, which is an alcoholic RTD, not the juice.

What carries the verdict is KDP's affirmative, product-by-product gluten and wheat disclosure, which demonstrably fires on a sibling mixer that contains soy sauce and does not fire on any Clamato. Note the scope: this covers the US juice range, not the malt-based Canadian canned Caesar, and it says nothing about the beer you pour in.
